Lesson 1 - Introduction & Installation

1. What is Nagios — overview, purpose, open-source vs enterprise editions (e.g. Nagios XI vs Nagios Core)

2. Role of monitoring in IT infrastructure / DevOps / IT operations

3. Installing Nagios on Linux (setting up server, dependencies, directory/file structure)

4. Setting up web interface / initial configuration (for those versions that support a GUI)

Lesson 2 - Configuration Basics

1. Understanding configuration files and directory structure in Nagios

2. Defining hosts, host-groups, services, service checks, commands, contacts, and dependencies

3. Defining host & service monitoring (e.g. CPU, Memory, Disk, Network) for servers

4. Setting up service and host dependencies, custom commands/plugins if needed

Lesson 3 - Plugins & Add-ons / Monitoring Agents

1. Understanding plugins: what they are, how they work, obtaining/installing plugins

2. Using remote agent-based monitoring (e.g. via NRPE — remote plugin executor) for Linux servers

3. Monitoring Windows machines using agents like NSClient++ or using WMI / SNMP depending on configuration

4. SNMP-based monitoring for network devices or systems where agent installation isn’t possible

Lesson 4 - Host & Service Monitoring / Checks

1. Performing host and service checks (active or passive)

2. Monitoring key resources: CPU, RAM, disk, network interfaces, processes; services like HTTP, FTP, mail, etc.

3. Monitoring network devices (routers, switches, firewalls, storage devices) via SNMP or other methods

Lesson 5 - Alerts, Notifications & Escalations

1. Configuring alerts — email, SMS, or other notification methods for service/host failures and recoveries

2. Setting up contact groups, notification rules, escalation paths, dependencies for notifications

3. Handling acknowledgement, downtime scheduling, re-notifications depending on event status (soft/hard states, retries)

Lesson 6 - Performance, Reporting & Dashboards

1. Generating performance graphs / charts / dashboards to monitor historical performance trends

2. Reports and summary reports: availability reports, executive-level reports, host/service uptime reports, logs, etc.

3. Integration with databases or storage (for long-term data history), or using frontends/add-ons for better visualization depending on course scope
